This is the way golf should be.
You can play and practice or practice while you play. For someone desires playing instead of the drudgery of practice then this course could be the place for you. It’s one of my personal favorites here in the South Bay.
You have a mixture of mostly par 3s with two short par fours. Personally I bag my driver, 3-wood and 5-wood and favour my 3 hybrid, 5-iron to Sand Wedge when playing here. Most of the par 3s are under 120 yards so you get plenty of practice on typical approach shots. The green complexes are well maintained so you get fairly fast greens that run true (towards Sepulveda Blvd) with a first cut and rough just to add a little spice to your short game.
For the money, you get on relatively quickly. You can finish a round sometimes in 45 minutes; the longest round took me 2 hours, but typically an hour is all you really need to
finish 9 here. And you can buy a month pass to play all you can Monday – Thursday. For a frugal golfer like myself, this offers significant value.
And if you need to polish your game a little you can hit balls at their range or take advantage of a pretty large practice green and chipping area with bunker.
Ok enough with my travelogue, here is my review.
Played here just to prove to myself that Alondra’s greens are the worst kept secret in the South Bay and I was right! Alondra you can take those greens and shove it.
I was literally all by my lonesome here today. The closest group was a twosome around 4 holes behind me. Apparently an event just ended and I had full run of the place.
Greens are in decent shape, fast to medium in speed and rolled fairly true. They feel spongy and receptive but you get a decent roll. The speed of the practice green does not match the greens on the course. I would say the speed on the practice green is faster than the greens on the course.
Fairways have good coverage. Rough is thick. Sand in bunkers is typical hard packed.
I enjoy this course because while it is crowded the longest a round of 9 holes can take is approximately 2 hours. Me, I finished playing 2 balls in an hour. Could have finished faster but I took my time.
For me, this course offers a lot of what big courses offer but with a time constraint it fits most folks busy schedules especially mine. Also they have an all you can play option monthly and can be pretty economical if only to bite that golf itch.
Would I play here again? Sure. It’s a fun course. It plays fast. And more importantly gives a golfer confidence with their short game. For me it beats hitting the ball at the range any day.
